It’s of no great surprise to us here at PBS that the new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440 has been awarded the ‘Best Monohull Cruising Boat 40 to 50 feet’ in the annual US Sail magazine awards. It’s also been short-listed for the European Yacht of the Year and is a very likely winner when these awards are announced next month. The Sail award judges make special mention of designer Philippe Briand having turned cockpit design on its head by producing ascending side-decks from aft of the helms to make movement forward a breeze. It details the ‘head smackingly brilliant’ cockpit coamings that fold out to form sun-loungers, and the general layout which lends itself to easy living on-board, especially the rectangular bunks throughout which are comfortable and allow the use of conventional bedding.
In summary they state “The cumulative result of all of these details and this kind of forward thinking is a boat that sets a new standard in terms of liveability afloat.
