The first of the six new Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 380’s sold in Australia to-date has recently arrived in Sydney and is now commissioned and being enjoyed by its owner.
It’s always difficult to really know what a new design is really like, no matter how many videos and photo you see, but we are genuinely impressed with this yacht, especially with how it sails and handles. It may even be an improvement on the sensational Sun Odyssey 349, and that’s saying something.
When you see just how much bigger this is than the Sun Odyssey 36i of the not too distant passed it really has to be seen to be believed as the hull length is almost exactly the same.
The unique and patented sloping side deck has been successfully incorporated into the 380 and you simply have to experience a Sun Odyssey with this feature to realise the huge benefits, whether at sea or at anchor. The side decks take nothing away from the cockpit which is extremely comfortable with deep seating that is particularly well protected with a spray-dodger.
Down below the saloon space has been used well with a workable L-shaped galley to port and head to starboard. In the 2-cabin layout there is an enormous, dedicated shower aft of the head, which has access to a huge storage space also accessible from the cockpit.
The navigation table is small but workable forward of the head on the starboard side, with a bench seat with built in nook for comfortable lounging, while opposite is the U-shaped dinette, with an option to convert to an additional double.
This first example has the second head adjacent to the forward cabin, so the bed is offset, plus still surprisingly roomy, though in a single head layout this becomes an island style fully rectangular double.
The second Sun Odyssey 380 due for Sydney is on a ship here now, and we have a stock boat on order which is expected to be delivered in December of next year.
