The new Sun Odyssey 349 is an enormous success, so the down-side of that is availability. In fact there is only one example available to Australia this season and that is just completing at the factory.
We’ve been taking the latest delivered SO349 around to the various clubs in Sydney to twilight race it, just to show how well it sails and it’s far exceeded our expectations. As a guide it is finishing the course with well sailed Etchell’s, Cavalier 350, Bavaria 41, Elan 40, Northshore 369 and doing a horizon job on similar sized production yachts. This is a standard boat with the optional fat-head mainsail and a genoa.
That’s all very well, but for those not interested in performance we have also also been sailing an example with self-tacking jib and standard mainsail. As an easily handled cruising yacht for exploring our wonderful waterways you won’t find another that heels less, is so well balanced and just so easy to sail single-handed.
Is it any wonder that the SO349 has been short-listed for ‘European Yacht of the Year’ and ‘Cruising World Yacht of the Year’! Combine this with exceptional pricing and is it any wonder that they are selling like hot-cakes. Eight are already on the way to Australia of which seven have been sold and heading for 150 sold World-wide in the first 8 months of production.
