We can now confirm that the first of the new Sun Odyssey 490’s will debut at the Sydney International Show, along with its smaller brother the 440, which has already had a huge impact Worldwide winning all three of the major yachting awards Internationally. It’s no great surprise that five are already on the way to NSW.
The 490 and 440 are not just the first of a new generation of Jeanneau Sun Odyssey’s, they are the first of a whole new generation of cruising yachts, breaking new ground in several areas. Firstly these are the first production cruising yachts to use a hull form with lots of volume forward, derived from the latest racing yachts, which results in a yacht with more internal volume, and wider safer decks. The stroke of genius was to combine with this sloping side-decks which mean that access to the cockpit is easy and safe without climbing or stepping over cockpit coamings. This is a World first, and an added benefit of this is that the cockpit coamings themselves can be higher than they normally would be, giving more protection in the cockpit, and a more comfortable back-rest.
In addition the boom is angled to bring the goose-neck much lower, as is commonly seen on the round the World single-handers, making it extremely easy to tidy the mainsail into a generous boom-bag, so sail handling is easy.
Down below the available volume for yachts of their size has to be seen to be believed, and it has then made it possible to have cabin double bunks that are perfectly rectangular, just like those at home, so lots of elbow room, and you can use regular sheets and bed-covers. Brilliant!
The 490 has an astonishing owners’ cabin forward, set back from the bow by a dedicated deck accessed sail locker. Not only does it have its own separate toilet and shower, but it also has abundant storage, a vanity unit with its own sink, and book shelves!
