An unusual example of these highly regarded yachts in that it has never been raced, so has been enjoyed as a cruising yacht with a pleasing level of performance. The Sun Fast 37 has an identical cockpit and interior layout as the Sun Odyssey 37, which sold in huge number around the World. The difference are that there are six self-tailing winches, rather than 3 or 4, a mainsheet traveller, which in the boat can be quickly disconnected from the mainsheet to completely open up the cockpit, a larger diameter wheel for fine control sailing, and increased stability with a slightly deeper lead bulb keel.
Starting at the transom there is a swim platform with boarding ladder and shower. The helm seat lowers to create a walk-through to the cockpit which has a lazarette locker and seat locker to starboard, while to port there is a double gas locker (The gas system was re-certified last year) and large under seat locker. The touchscreen MFD/Plotter mounts on the wheel pedestal which has a binnacle compass. A foldout picnic table is generally used as a cockpit table, though there is also a Jeanneau supplied cockpit table. The mainsheet is clipped out to the gunwhale when not sailing, but otherwise gives good control to the helmsperson.
Rigging was last replaced in 2018, and the mainsail easily packs into a book bag with lazy-jacks, while the headsail furls from the cockpit.
Down below the fit out is all Burmese teak, with all of the structure hand laminated for strength and durability. The head is aft to port with a separate shower area and wet hanging locker. All the yachts valves have been updated to Tru Design polymer valves, so maintenance free. To starboard is the L-shaped galley with good locker storage, a 150 Litre 12v fridge and 2-burner stove with oven. Opposite is a pantry cupboard, forward of which is the nav table and a bench seat. At the nav station is the Fusion Bluetooth stereo and Icom VHF radio.
The dinette is on the starboard side of the saloon with lockers outboard and storage under the seating.
The Forward cabin is a conventional V-berth with hanging lockers both sides and a bed that is 2.05m long x 1.6m wide, while the owners cabin aft has a generous 2.04m x 2.1m bed that can therefore be used transversely or fore & aft.
In terms of sailing performance the Sun Fast 37 is a very capable cruiser/racer with another Pittwater based example having had considerable success in the last year with a division win at Hamilton Island Race Week, divisional win at Sail Port Stephens, and summer point score twilight win.
So, if you are either looking for a cruising yacht with excellent passage sailing performance (another example sailed to Australia from France some years ago), or a true cruiser/racer that with the right sails will compete against anything out there, while offering full genuine cruising comfort, then don't miss out on this superb yacht.
