The new Code 0 option has become one of the most popular options ordered on Jeanneau yachts in the last year. A Code O sail is a crossover between an asymmetric spinnaker and a genoa that is loose luffed and is set forward of the genoa on a single-line furler using the spinnaker halyard. It can be carried reasonably close to the wind and through to broad reaching and complements the new generation yachts with their short-overlap headsails giving a significant boost to performance from close to broad reaching up to about 12-14 knots of wind. One of the great advantages of these sails is that they can so easily be furled and then left until you finished your passage or days sailing, then the sail cab be lowered into a normal sail bag for stowage. On the new Jeanneau’s that benefit from the increased stability of their chined-hulls they are particularly effective.

SUN FAST 43 “OUR NIRVANA” CROSSES THE DITCH:

After months of will we – won’t we, “Our Nirvana” was finally prepared for the Tasman crossing and everything was ready, except the weather. A series of lows dropping out of the Pacific put a hold on everything until finally on the 2nd of January, I set off solo for Opua in the Bay of Islands. A southerly course to 36 degrees South paid off and nice reaching conditions prevailed for most of the trip until yet another low passed 100 miles from North Cape to give a nice 30 knot bash for 24 hours. Russell radio assured me all was good on the East coast and they were bang on. After 7 ½ days, customs done, we had 7 weeks cruising Great Barrier Island and the Bay of Islands. We could only smirk as we heard reports of rain, rain and more rain back in Coff’s Harbour, as we had the opposite. Beautiful stable weather, big snapper, heaps of greenlip mussels & oysters by the bucket load.

Finally time to come home and another 7 day trip back to Coff’s with a bit of everything, but nothing above 30 knots. I couldn’t fault “Our Nirvana” and we had no problems at all & credit Ron, Lee and the team at PBS for introducing us to her as she proved to be a strong, fast cruiser, albeit a bit of a handful for an old bloke single-handed sometimes!

PBS’s Ron Jacobs sailed as tactician aboard IRC Division 2 class winner Exile & compiled this report…

This event is becoming the must do event on the East Coast of Australia, within easy reach of Sydney, great facilities & an all round great feeling around the docks with light breezes & sunny days everyone appeared to have a great time.

There were 2 divisions for Performance racers & 2 for Cruising yachts which raced within the confines of the bay, plus the NSW IRC Championships (for those a little more offshore competitive) that raced outside the headlands guarding the bay.

IRC Rating Results were:

IRC Division 1- Emotional Hooligan won from PBS Client Bob Steel in “Quest” 2nd & Calm from Melbourne 3rd .

IRC Division 2 – PBS client Rob Reynolds DK 46 “Exile” won, from the Swan 45 One design “Tulip” & current Australian Champion “Victoire” 3rd.

IRC Division 3 – The Summit 35 La Altra Donna won from the Sydney 36CR “Philosophers Club” & the evergreen 1985 designed Farr 43 “Wild Rose”
